Bharat Ratna - Aruna Asaf Ali  
   

She was born in 1909 in Kalka (Haryana). Under the influence of Gandhi and Nehru, Aruna took part in Civil Disobedience Movement and Satyagraha and courted arrest in 1942. The turing point came with the Quit India Movement in 1942. On August 9 when all prominent Congress leaders were jailed, Aruna heroically hoisted the Indian tricolor at the Gowalia Tank Maiden, Bombay.

She was the recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize, the Indira Gandhi Award for National Interation and the Nehru Award for International Understanding. In 1996 this great noble person passed away. Shortly after her death, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civil honour of the country, was conferred upon her, by a grateful nation.

 
 


 
 
Chitra (Sahai) Narain  
   

After a brilliant academic career at All Saints College, Nainital and the University of Allahabad where she bagged the Chancellor's Medal for the best all round student, followed a brief fellowhip at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA. She distinguished hereself as a writer / producer and presenter of both radio and television programmes, winning several national and international awards. She rose to the top of her profession, first as the Deputy Director General of All India Radio (AIR) and then of national television (Doordashan), a rare achievement for a woman.

She is a life member and active participant of the Indian Humanist Union affiliated to the International Humanist & Ethical Union, London, for the last 40 years.

 
Anjana Kuthiala  
   

She joined All Saints' School in 1965 and passed out in 1970 having secured 10 points in I.S.C. She became Miss Delhi 1974 (Femina) at Ashoka Hotel, Delhi.

She became Femina's Miss India 1975 and represented India in the Miss World Contest at the Albert Hall, London in November'75. She stood No. 8 and was a finalist from 78 countries.

She writes for Times of India. Hindustan Times, India Expess and Sunday Observer besides Femina and other magazines. She is writing a book on her life- a life that has been very unusual, her tale of a Miss India who married into extreme orthodoxy and yet emerged a winner.

 
Sukhi Turner  
   

Born on 13th April 1952 into the Indian Sikh Community an religion. She attended school at All Saints' Anglican School, Nainital, from 1962 to 1967. Developed a small home-help business. Established Indian Cuisine enterprise involving demonstration cooking and fortnightly Indian dinners. Marketed own blend of spices. Director - Dunedin Holding Company Limited.

Dismayed at the negative effect of the restructuring of New Zealand society in the 80's and 90's. Jointed the Green Party Aotearoa in 1993. Elected to Dunedin City Council at first attempt in 1992. Elected Mayr of Dunedin at first attempt in 1995, defeating the incumbent, Richard Walls, by 2410 votes. (The first time an incumbent Dunedian Mayor had been defeated in 27 years).
